Amina Hassan, a 20-year-old woman from Adamawa state, took drastic action by setting fire to her husband's house after he refused to grant her a divorce. Hailing from Shuware in Adamawa’s Mubi North local government area, she had married Muhammed Auwal only five weeks prior.
The heart of the matter lay in a pre-wedding agreement they made, stipulating that he would divorce her shortly after their marriage ceremony. Amina asserted that when she confronted Auwal about the agreed-upon divorce, he resorted to violence, allegedly hitting her. This prompted her to set the house ablaze out of frustration and anger.
According to Suleiman Nguroje, a police public relations officer, Amina explained to the authorities that despite her pleas, Auwal refused to divorce her and instead physically assaulted her, leading to her extreme reaction.
Moreover, Amina had informed her parents days before the wedding that she no longer wished to proceed with the marriage. Despite her expressed reluctance, her parents allegedly insisted on proceeding with the wedding plans, asserting that it was too late to back out since invitation cards had already been distributed.
