BRUSSELS (AP) — Charlie Colin, bassist and founding member of the band Train, has passed away at the age of 58. Known for hits like "Drops of Jupiter" and "Meet Virginia," Colin died after slipping and falling in the shower while house-sitting in Brussels, as reported by TMZ.com. His sister, Carolyn Stephens, confirmed his death on Wednesday.

Colin, who grew up in Southern California, attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. He initially played in a band called Apostles with guitarist Jimmy Stafford and singer Rob Hotchkiss. After the group disbanded, Colin spent a year in Singapore writing jingles before moving to San Francisco. There, he reunited with Hotchkiss and Stafford to form Train in the early '90s, bringing in drummer Scott Underwood and vocalist Pat Monahan.

Train's debut album was released in 1998, followed by the successful "Drops of Jupiter" in 2001 and "My Private Nation" in 2003. "Meet Virginia" from their first album broke into the Billboard Hot 100's Top 20, while the title track from "Drops of Jupiter" reached No. 5 and won two Grammy Awards.

Colin left Train in 2003 due to substance abuse issues. "Charlie is one incredible bass player, but he was in a lot of pain, and the way he was dealing with it was very painful for everyone else around him," Monahan told NBC San Diego.

In 2015, Colin formed a new band, Painbirds, with Hotchkiss and Tom Luce. He later started the Side Deal in 2017 with Stan Frazier of Sugar Ray and the PawnShop Kings' Joel and Scott Owen.

Train paid tribute to Colin on social media, praising his bass playing and personality. "When I met Charlie Colin, I fell in love with him. He was the sweetest guy and what a handsome chap. His unique bass playing and beautiful guitar work helped get folks to notice us in SF and beyond. I’ll always have a warm place for him in my heart," the post read.

Colin, who had recently shared his fondness for Brussels on Instagram, also served as the musical director for the Newport Beach Film Festival. Todd Quartararo, co-founder of the festival, remembered him for his heart, compassion, and creativity.

Colin is survived by his parents, sister, and niece.
